Sumter County Advises Community Members to Prioritize Mosquito Prevention Practices
Sumter County Mosquito Control is encouraging mosquito prevention practices among residents following recent rainfall that has contributed to an increase in mosquito populations throughout the region and for prevention purposes. With the number of Dengue Fever cases reported in Hillsborough County, we are repeating this message for vigilance on the part of our residents.
Mosquito Control officials have observed growing mosquito populations across Sumter County as standing water from recent rains has created additional breeding opportunities. While mosquito control efforts continue throughout the County, property owners can play an important role in reducing mosquito populations by eliminating sources of standing water around their homes and businesses.
Even small amounts of standing water can provide an ideal breeding environment for mosquitoes. Residents are encouraged to regularly inspect their properties and:
- Dump and drain standing water from containers, buckets, flowerpots, toys, tires, wheelbarrows, and other items that can collect rainwater.
- Keep swimming pools properly maintained and ensure they are adequately chlorinated.
- Change the water in birdbaths and outdoor pet bowls frequently.
- Keep gutters and drains clear of leaves and debris to prevent water from accumulating in them.
- Cover or store outdoor containers that could collect rainwater.
- Check tarps, pool covers, and other outdoor items for pockets of standing water after rainfall.
- Keep yards and properties maintained to reduce areas where mosquitoes can rest and breed.
Residents should also take personal precautions to reduce the risk of mosquito bites, particularly during periods when mosquito activity is high. When spending time outdoors, wear long sleeves and long pants when practical and use an Environmental Protection Agency-registered insect repellent as directed. Additionally, screens on windows, doors, porches, and patios should be checked and repaired to help keep mosquitoes outside. Taking steps to reduce mosquito breeding areas and prevent mosquito bites can help protect individuals, families, and the broader community.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant after each rainfall event and make mosquito prevention part of their regular property-maintenance routine. Removing standing water at least once a week can significantly reduce potential mosquito breeding sites.
Sumter County Mosquito Control continues to monitor mosquito populations throughout the County through ongoing surveillance. Treatment areas are determined using data that may include adult mosquito light trap counts, landing rates, and citizen complaints. When mosquito populations exceed established action thresholds, targeted treatments are conducted.

Citizen reports, along with surveillance data, help Mosquito Control identify areas experiencing increased mosquito activity and determine where treatment may be needed.
Residents can also sign up for AlertSumter to receive notifications about mosquito spraying in their area. Alerts provide information about when and where mosquito spraying will occur so residents know when treatment trucks may be operating in their neighborhood.
